Globe Telecom and Smart Communications to carry iPhone 4S by end of 2011

Globe Telecom has been reaping the fruits of its exlusivity of carrying Apple's iPhone since the iPhone 3G. Forget that it is the device that revolutionized how we use mobile phones today, Apple's mobile phones at least on the marketing side have changed how consumers choose their carriers.

Before when a person decides to buy a phone, they would go to any carrier and buy the phone from a carrier that has the best bang for the buck. Considerations like how much upfront cash out is needed to get the phone (carriers subsidize a part of it), what freebies does one get from the purchase and which carrier most of his or her friends are on. Although that is still mostly the case today, the iPhone is just one of the few (if not only) phones where people would go to a certain carrier to get a specific phone.

For those that want it, they have already decided they will buy an iPhone. Globe Telecom gets their business because of the exlusivity and the consumer just chooses what postpaid or prepaid plan that work best for him or her.

It is already expected that soon Globe will start making the iPhone 4S available to their subscriber base. This tech blog quotes a Globe executive that said the device should be available next week.

However, it appears that another carrier has set their sights on that hot product as well, if this report is to be believed.

You should sign up to Veco's outage advisories. Here's how.

I usually blog on a desktop or a laptop but today I am writing this on an iPad because, yet again, there is a scheduled power interruption in our area. Our power service is provided by Veco.

To say that I am dissapointed is an understatement. The plan for today was:

* Blog about yesterday's Visayas Blogging Summit #vbs2011.
* Put up our christmas tree so that when the children return from their trip, "Surprise, surprise!" Wife gets the credit for the idea.
* Continue working on the paperwork of my professional development plan.

But in light of this sticky (literally) situation, I am now blogging to complain.

You know what, let's make it positive. Instead, I'm going to write about ways for us consumers not to be caught unaware.

NTC orders telcos: No suspension of ‘unli’ during holiday season

Making a pre-emptive move, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued two circulars ordering local telcos to keep their “unlimited” offerings during the crucial holiday season when mobile and Internet traffic is at its heaviest.

The NTC apparently released the directives to avoid a repeat of last year’s incident when the local operators suspended their bucket offerings during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Memorandum Order 9-11-2011, which was issued by the NTC on November 22, 2011, specifically provided mobile operators not to exclude December 23-26 and 30-31, 2011, as well as January 1-2 for their unlimited text and voice services.

On the other hand, Memorandum Order 9-11-2011 issued on November 23, also mandates the telcos to provide uninterrupted service on the same dates for their unlimited broadband access offerings.

The circulars also ordered the telcos to undertake the necessary network adjustments and maintenance to ensure that the networks are ready to accommodate the expected increase in traffic during the holiday season.

“Sufficient operation and maintenance personnel shall be deployed to ensure 99.9999-percent network reliability,” the memos said.

Smart and brave move by a government agency. I sure do hope the telcos are going to adhere to this and make sure 99.99% uptime.
